Whether he's irking his "Saturday Night Live" bosses with his frequent, deadpanned assertions of O.J. Simpson's guilt, antagonizing the lovable Conan O'Brien and his guests, or horrifying the women of "The View" with his assertion that Bill Clinton "killed a guy," Norm MacDonald's comedy stems from his masochistic ability to be the most hated guy in the room. More recently, MacDonald provided the most memorable...

The standard theatre season continues to phase into the Summer season. As light as things can be this time of year, it still surprises me when certain days end up being packed with openings. Such is the case with the last weekend in May, which just happens to have like . . . six different shows opening. I will only be abl to make it to a few, but here’s one that I really wish I could make it to....

The final performance of Marquette’s Alternative Theatre Festival was the second performance of a feature-length comedy show—The Untitled Conor Sullivan Life Story Project. The basic premise follows a comic staging of a doomed production of a dramatic staging of Marquette student Conor Sullivan’s life story as written and directed by Conor Sullivan. Matt Wickey plays Conor Sullivan—evident...

I recently got an email from Milwaukee Comedy Fest founder Matt Kemple asking me to mention again that the fest is still looking for entrants for the upcoming 2009 festival. Set to run in the Off-Broadway Theatre August 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th, the Comedy fest has been running long enough to have established a spot on the calendar somewhere between Summerfest and Irish Fest in Milwaukee’s summer...

The fourth annual Milwaukee Sketch and Improv Festival is just around the corner on the other side of summer. As near as  I can make out, one day longer than last year’s festival, the 2009 Milwaukee Sketchfest will run August 6 – 9.  The Sketchfest will be holding a two-day fundraiser this Friday and Saturday at the Alchemist Theatre that appears to be its own mini-sketch and improv fest. Th...

I could blame them for not wanting to return, given the cretinous audience at their show here last spring, but the HBO comedy duo Flight of the Conchords are returning on May 2 for two shows at the Riverside, at 7 and 10 p.m. That should give Milwaukee fans plenty of time to stock up on laser pointers or whatever else they need to find new ways to sabotage the performance this time around. The $35...

When 94.5 changed to Lake FM, a redundant, kitchen-sink format that litters Milwaukee's airwaves with additional classic rock, it felt like a big F-you to the city, so it's fitting, then, that the station's commercials literally flip Milwaukee the finger. The TV spots, generally loathed by viewers, introduce a bemused dude who controls music with his finger, but curiously, tha...

Prior to the opening of Rudolph the Pissed-Off Reindeer, the show's writer/director/co-producer Patrick Schmitz had voiced the thought that he may be a “one trick pony.” With no other plans to work on another feature-length play at any point in the future, Rudolph may be Schmitz’s only trick, but it’s a rather clever one.A parody of the Rankin and Bass stop motion animated TV specials of t...
