The 4th Annual Milwaukee Comedy Festival kicked off its third day with a series of groups from out of state.  Local comic Kevin Gerrity opened the early show with some stand-up. 17 years old, Gerrity’s stand-up felt very natural. So much stand-up is an attempt to tell the same three jokes in a different way . . . Gerrity avoided the traditional stand-up delivery posture and managed to develop ...

As mentioned here yesterday, the 4th Annual Milwaukee Comedy Festival officially starts tonight at 7:30pm with a performance of Madison’s Zombeatles. The Festival, which continues through Sunday is considerably bigger than it has been in previous years. The single biggest day on this year’s festival (and, by extension the 4 year history of the festival) is this coming Saturday. This Saturday, (...

Just as I was about to write-off the next couple of weeks as a void of theatre activity, I get a few notices about upcoming events. As early as this Thursday, there’s a performance by LeeRick at the Alchemist theatre. When I first got the notice, I could’ve sworn that was the stage name of a late ‘90’s Milwaukee slam poet, but I was wrong. LeeRick is actually the comedy team of Lee Rowl...

Some time ago, playwright/comic and improv instructor Patrick Schmitz contacted me about this 22 hour sketch comedy thing that he had going on at the Alchemist . . .and I seem to remember really wanting to go but having a busy time of things and generally not being able to go. Evidently some time has passed. This weekend Schmitz and company present the fourth in the Sketch 22 comedy series...

Whether he's irking his "Saturday Night Live" bosses with his frequent, deadpanned assertions of O.J. Simpson's guilt, antagonizing the lovable Conan O'Brien and his guests, or horrifying the women of "The View" with his assertion that Bill Clinton "killed a guy," Norm MacDonald's comedy stems from his masochistic ability to be the most hated guy in the room. More recently, MacDonald provided the most memorable...

The standard theatre season continues to phase into the Summer season. As light as things can be this time of year, it still surprises me when certain days end up being packed with openings. Such is the case with the last weekend in May, which just happens to have like . . . six different shows opening. I will only be abl to make it to a few, but here’s one that I really wish I could make it to....

The final performance of Marquette’s Alternative Theatre Festival was the second performance of a feature-length comedy show—The Untitled Conor Sullivan Life Story Project. The basic premise follows a comic staging of a doomed production of a dramatic staging of Marquette student Conor Sullivan’s life story as written and directed by Conor Sullivan. Matt Wickey plays Conor Sullivan—evident...

I recently got an email from Milwaukee Comedy Fest founder Matt Kemple asking me to mention again that the fest is still looking for entrants for the upcoming 2009 festival. Set to run in the Off-Broadway Theatre August 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th, the Comedy fest has been running long enough to have established a spot on the calendar somewhere between Summerfest and Irish Fest in Milwaukee’s summer...
