MGMT, Yeasayer, Avett Brothers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Diplo among dozens of headliners

By Evan Rytlewski
Summerfest has been gradually announcing its 2013 Marcus Amphitheater headliners for months now, but it’s stayed mum on side-stage acts. That changed today, when breaking from its usual tradition of announcing grounds stage performers in small chunks, the festival revealed the meat of its lineup in one massive drop. Comedian Lewis Black (who will be returning to the festival this year) revealed ...

Summerfest hasn't started announcing its side-stage lineups yet, but a few bands are spilling the beans early by posting their tour itineraries on their websites. One of those bands is the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who will play Milwaukee's biggest musical festival on Friday, June 28, according to their site, as part of their tour behind their new album Mosquito, which comes out April 16. More details on t...

On this week's episode of The Disclaimer, a near-weekly half-hour of truth-telling and debate between WMSE station promotions director Ryan Schleicher, A.V. Club Milwaukee editor Matt Wild and I, we discuss a loaded Daniel Bice column from last week that revealed Summerfest's CEO Don Smiley makes more money than you'd expect (and apparently a lot more money than even some Summerfest board member...

Relations are no longer "Frosty" between Ritchie and Gano

By Evan Rytlewski
It ended with an argument over Wendy's. Milwaukee's Violent Femmes had been playing together for nearly 30 years, but that shared history wasn't enough to keep them together in the wake one of the fast-food giant's ad campaigns, which used the Femmes' iconic "Blister in the Sun" with the permission of guitarist Gordon Gano but not bassist Brian Ritchie. Incensed by that commercial, Ritchie sued Ga...

It's been a while since Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have played the Marcus Amphitheater—24 years, if you're keeping count. The veteran Heartland rock band will change that this summer when they return to the amphitheater for a Friday, June 28 date as part of their first tour since 2010. Summerfest announced the show this morning; tickets go on sale Friday, March 8 at 11 a.m., with a pre-sale...

Summerfest has announced its second 2013 Marcus Amphitheater headliner and, like the first, it's another big country artist: Tim McGraw. One of the all-time best-selling artists of the Soundscan era, McGraw brought a cool, sensual sound to country music when he hit the charts in the mid-’90s, literally topped off by his large sized cowboy hats that hid his eyes while crooning hits like “Don’...

The extremely frugal may end up spending a little bit of extra time calling into radio stations trying to win Summerfest tickets this year. Yesterday the festival's board passed a budget that calls for a $1 increase in ticket prices, the Journal Sentinel reports. That brings regular ticket prices to $17—not too bad, considering that the festival still plans to offer the usual array of ticket dis...

Milwaukee illusionist explores the secrets of his trade

“What’s the secret of magic?” ponders David Seebach. “The secret of magic is the magician.” He would know. Seebach is arguably the most famous modern magician in the land of Houdini. He’s performed

Jason Aldean

By Shepherd Express Staff
Summerfest has announced its first 2013 Marcus Amphitheater headliner, and true to form, it's a country act: Jason Aldean. The Macon, Ga., native has been a country mainstay since his single “Hicktown,” a rollicking, irreverent ode to small towns everywhere, reached No. 10 on the country charts back in 2005. But it wasn’t until his third album, 2007's Wide Open, that Aldean truly emerged as ...
