We spend a lot of time on The Disclaimer—WMSE's weekly crosstalk with station promotions director Ryan Schleicher, A.V. Club Milwaukee's Matt Wild and I—taking local media to task for goofy antics or irresponsible reporting. For this week's show, however, we were challenged by a listener to talk about local media and reporters that we feel actually goes a good job—and, to be sure, there are ...

On this week's Disclaimer three-fer, WMSE's Ryan Schleicher, A.V. Club Milwaukee's Matt Wild and I take on a trio of topics. We start the show on a serious note, discussing the fatal shooting at Kochanski's Concertina Beer Hall and examining owner Andy Kochanski's response to it. By running with his new reputation as a second-amendment hero, is he erasing the character of what was once an apolitic...

This week on The Disclaimer, WMSE's weekly grumble fest with station promotions director Ryan Schleicher, A.V. Club Milwaukee editor Matt Wild and I, we commemorate Matt's least favorite non-event of the year: the release of Beloit College's annual Mindset List, which draws ridiculous amounts of coverage and web traffic for making not particularly funny generalizations about the generation gap. Wh...

Spurred by a couple of conversations about how few forums the city has for blunt cultural criticism, WMSE launched its weekly talk show The Disclaimer last year with no guidelines or any particular long-term vision. To our surprise, the show has received a fairly warm welcome and garnered a lot of feedback. Inspired by that response, WMSE announced today that it is expanding its lineup of mid-day ...

This Week on The Disclaimer, WMSE's weekly crosstalk with station promotions director Ryan Schleicher, A.V. Club Milwaukee editor Matt Wild and I, we examine the state of critics. Newspapers around the globe (including one close to home) have scaled back their review coverage and cut name writers. Does it matter? Have bloggers replaced the role of the traditional, authoritative newspaper critic? A...

Saluting the greatest flag you never knew existed

By Evan Rytlewski
This Week on The Disclaimer, WMSE's weekly crosstalk between station promotions director Ryan Schleicher, A.V. Club Milwaukee editor Matt Wild and I, we learned that Milwaukee has a flag—and not just any flag, but possibly the greatest flag I have ever seen. It has County Stadium and a menorah on it, as well as a UFO that may or may not be attacking the Allen-Bradley Clock Tower. Unfortunately, ...

We discuss city development issues regularly on The Disclaimer, WMSE's weekly crosstalk with station promotions director Ryan Schleicher, the A.V. Club's Matt Wild and I, but we're hardly experts on the topic. For this week's episode, we're joined by somebody who is: Urban Milwaukee's Jeramey Jannene, who talks about some of the "black hole" properties that blight Wisconsin Avenue and what the cit...

But that may or may not succeed

By Evan Rytlewski
This week on The Disclaimer, WMSE's weekly crosstalk between station promotions director Ryan Schleicher, A.V. Club Milwaukee editor Matt Wild and I, we turn our attention to a bunch of cool proposals for the city and handicap their odds of actually succeeding. Among the projects we're rooting for: plans to resurrect the old Grand Warner and Avalon theaters—wanting to own a theater is the new wa...

This week on The Disclaimer, WMSE's weekly crosstalk between station promotions director Ryan Schleicher, A.V. Club Milwaukee editor Matt Wild and I, we discuss Saturday's potentially dangerous situation at Summerfest, when huge crowds rushed through the gates without paying, according to multiple social media accounts. Matt suggests a few ways to prevent that from happening again, while I lament ...

In all my years of covering the local music scene, I've never seen anything divide Milwaukee musicians as reliably as the local music stage at Summerfest. As in year's past, this year the stage, now titled the K-Nation/Cascio Interstate Music Stage, will not be paying its performers. Instead, each band will receive a $200 gift card to Cascio. The stage promoters frame this as the best they can do....
