Team USA, which featured two current Badgers and three former Badgers, got some Olympic revenge on Team Canada by winning the Four Nations Cup in Sweden this weekend. Current Badger Hilary Knight and Brianna Decker as well as former Badgers Jessie Vetter, Molly Engstrom and Meghan Duggan all suited up for Team USA. The win was that much sweeter because USA had lost to Canada earlier in the tournament. The championship game came down to a shootout and Hilary Knight scored the game winner to give USA the gold medal. Jessie Vetter stopped Canada's last shootout to secure the win. There was a current and a former Badger on Team Canada as well, as Stephanie McKeough and Bobbi Jo Slusar skated. Team USA out-shot Canada 60-38 and Vetter saved 35 shots and was named MVP of the tournament. The Four Nations Cup is played every year around this time and always pits USA against Canada, Sweden and Finland. Originally it was the 3 Nations Cup  - since its inception in 1996, Canada has won 12 Gold Medals. But not this time.

This article from the JS says that included in the $87,000 study about whether or not UW-Milwaukee should add football is that they're also considering adding men's and women's ice hockey. The same sentence mentions lacrosse and rugby, but for some reason, the hockey part is getting a lot of attention. The story about UWM exploring football leaked a few days ago and the leak included the detail ab...

Junior Ryan Little apparently took a shot to the hand during the NoDak series and that exacerbated some old injuries he had. Giving possibly the most vague injury interview ever, Little told WSJ's Andy Baggot that "there's some broken stuff in there." Apparently a variety of doctors have checked out Little and have found that he really can't do additional damage to the hand if he continues to play...

Women's sophomore goalie Alex Rigsby was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. Freshman men's goalie Joel Rumpel was named WCHA Rookie of the Week. Rigsby had 80 saves last weekend in UW's sweep of Duluth including career-high 46 saves Saturday night. She held UMD to just 2-of-9 on power plays. Rumpel is one of two freshman goalies the Badger men's team is using ...

Freshman defensemen Jake McCabe suffered a freak injury to his hand on Friday and will be sidelined 6-8 weeks. Reaching for a water bottle on the bench, he somehow got clipped by a teammates skate. What he thought was a minor cut turned out to be a severed tendon. He immediately underwent surgery. McCabe has been on the #1 defensive line with Hobey candidate Justin Schultz and has also been a part...

Last week the Badger men's hockey team went into Houghton, MI and were swept by WCHA perpetual bottom-feeder Michigan Tech. They lost two OT games (their second and third of the season) and fans and others around the WCHA were wondering if Wisconsin was really that bad. The Badgers are young - incredibly inexperienced and young. Coach Mike Eaves is dressing about 15 underclassmen a night with just...

Andy Baggot, the UW hockey beat writer for the Wisconsin State Journal, reported today that the Badgers women's hockey team is putting together a formal bid to host the 2014 Women's Frozen Four. The biggest drawback from the Badgers' bid is that the 2012 FF will be in Duluth, MN and the 2013 FF was awarded to Minnesota. It does seem unlikely that the committee would place a third straight tourname...

The Badger men's hockey team lost a second OT game in the young season on a goal that players, coach Mike Eaves and even Madison.com hockey beat writer Andy Baggot think shouldn't have been allowed. The goal play starts at about 1:32 of the below video, so you can judge for yourself. The argument is that the Michigan Tech player checks Badger John Ramage into goalie Landon Peterson, taking him co...

I actually wrote an epically long blog post last week listing all the reasons and stats that prove to you that Wisconsin women's hockey is a great sport/team and you should become a fan. I broke down the difference in the men's game and the women's game, told you who to watch and basically gave it all on a platter. But the blogging gods hate me and the post disappeared when I tried to post it. I h...
