With their 3 seed, Marquette is in the West Bracket and their opening round opponent is slightly more difficult, as their getting the winner of the play-in game, meaning they have to do twice the scouting. Marquette's portion of the bracket does seem a little light on name schools - but they are matched with #2 Mizzou - Big 12 Champions If they get through their portion of the bracket, they're loo...

Junior forward Brianna Decker was named a Patty Kazmaier Award Top 3 Finalist this week. She is joined by Jocelyne Lamoureux of North Dakota and Florence Schelling of Northeastern University. Decker leads the nation in goals, with 36, while Lamoureux leads in points, points per game and assists. Schelling is a goalie with a .950 save percentage and a 1.42 goals against average. This, obviously, me...

I'm not dumb enough to pretend this is going to go away,” Ryan Braun said after winning his appeal of a positive drug test and avoiding a 50-game suspension. Indeed, Dino Laurenzi Jr., who collected Braun's urine sample, was just as forceful...

The list of of Patty Kazmaier finalists was narrowed down to 10 today and two Badgers made the list. Hilary Knight and Brianna Decker are both named to the Top 10 list. This is Hilary's third time on the Top 10 list. Despite the fact that her senior year numbers probably aren't as great as we all would have hoped, for me there's no one on this list that compares to Hilary. Over on the discussion b...

It took just 10 days for Blake Geoffrion to get called up from AHL Hamilton to his NHL parent-club Montreal. You'll remember that Blake, when he skates for the Canadiens, will become a fourth-generation Hab. Both great-grandfather Howie Morentz's number 7 and grandfather "Boom Boom" Geoffrion's number 5 are retired by Montreal and new callups usually just get assigned a number by the team, but Bla...

Hilary Knight, Brianna Decker and Alex Rigsby are on the list of 30 finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Award - the top player in women's collegiate hockey. It's Knight's 3rd nomination, Decker's 2nd and Rigsby's 1st. With the offensive firepower on the Badgers, I think Rigsby often gets overlooked, but she currently leads the nation with a .950 save percentage and is s2nd with 890 total saves. Her...

I'm not so sure why this came about now, but today the University of Wisconsin announced that the ice surface at the Kohl Center would be named after "Badger" BOb Johnson. They didn't say when it would happen, but the article does mention that 22 former student-athletes donated money for the project - implying that they paid for the right to have this move made - which is weird. It's not that Badg...

The Predators announced today that they traded Blake Geoffrion to the Montreal Canadiens. Geoffrion is a former Badger and winner of the Hobey Baker Award. Though he started the season in Nashville, he was injured early on and hasn't made it back to the NHL in a few months, spending time with the AHL Milwaukee Admirals. Geoffrion played 22 games with the Predators this season. He registered three ...

The New York Times Slap Shot hockey page has recently featured articles on Gordie Howe and NHL realignment. They also featured the Badger women's hockey team. College hockey doesn't get too much national press. Women's college hockey gets even less. So for the NYT to talk about the accomplishments of the Badger women's hockey team and the records they keep breaking with Fill the Bowl - that's rea...

The Big Ten Hockey Conference hasn't stated playing yet, but their proposal for conference playoffs had caused quite a few ripples in the Wisconsin sports landscape. The Badgers' current conference, the WCHA, holds their conference playoff, the Final Five is always played at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Badgers have never before had to worry about needing to use the Kohl Cent...
