The state Supreme Court agreed to review the constitutional ban against same-sex marriage and civil unions of all kinds. No, the court isnt weighing in on whether the ban is meanspirited, discriminatory and redundant. (Even though it is.) Its going to review whether the referendum approved by the majority of Wisconsin voters in 2006 was legal or not. Seems that referendums can only ask a questio...

Good thing Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker is launching his sixth annual Tourism Ride next week, allegedly to promote Milwaukee County’s hotspots, and not the county executive’s campaign for governor. Because according to a new poll by Daily Kos/Research 2000, Wisconsin voters have no idea who he is. A full 51% have no opinion of the perpetual candidate and constant Tweeter. T...

Now that Gov. Doyle has crippled the Milwaukee County Transit System by vetoing a half-cent sales tax for local mass transit, bus advocates were hoping that some federal dollars would help them through the rough times. Well, they’re getting some assistance from Congresswoman Gwen Moore. From today’s announcement: Congresswoman Moore secured $500,000 in the House bill for the Milwa...

“Governor Jim Doyle will make a special announcement to the people of Wisconsin tomorrow, Monday, August 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m.,” reads the press advisory from the governor’s office. But we all know what he’s going to announce, or at least some of what he’ll announce: he’s not going to run for re-election in 2010. I had a weird feeling about this even though...

We’re Focused on the Kids, Not Distracting Politics

Last week’s election of Michael Bonds as president of the Milwaukee Public Schools Board of Directors comes at a crucial time for MPS. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Gov. Jim Doyle are attempting to set up an advisory council to oversee MPS’s finances. An audit commissioned by the two men purported to show...

Scott Walker is looking out for inner-city residents

Last week, Jim Doyle asked Washington for $519 million dollars to use to upgrade transit in Wisconsin. Would that money go for busses in the inner-city? Transit for the disabled? Bus ticket vouchers for homeless shelters?

Hardin’s district will have a new MPS board representative

Voters in the city’s North Side and Riverwest neighborhoods will have a chance on April 7 to elect a new representative to the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) board of directors. The Fourth District’s longtime MPS board representative, Charlene Hardin, is not on the ballot. The challengers, Michael Mathias and...

An AP story reporting on Jim Doyle's proposed budget starts with this sentence: "Taxes will go up on smokers, the rich, and large companies." What a surprise. Doyle's budget targets the Democrat's axis of evil- Big Tobacco, Big Money, and Big Oil. Doyle proposed his budget in a 34-minute speech last Tuesday. The speech was like an overlong car chase in a low-budget action movie- constant evasion of responsibility with the same old plot devices used to cover some gaping budget holes. "My budget stands up for the people who earn regular paychecks and the people who, through no fault of their own, have lost theirs," Doyle said.
