LSU is #1 October 01, 2007 | 02:03 PM And while I'm doubly happy, both because LSU is #1 and because stinkin' USC finally isn't, the whole makes me a little bitter. For weeks Wisconsin has lost ground in the polls because of lackluster performances against bad teams. Now LSU goes into halftime against Tulane (frickin' Tulane!)* leading 10-9 and jumps into first place. I feel this is a little u...

Big Ten Football doesn't suck as much your conference does October 01, 2007 | 02:03 PM Ohio State is #4. Wisconsin is #5. Purdue is #23. I'm not so stupid as to not recognize that this is less about us being great and more about other teams sucking. However, my team's don't suck more than your conference's teams! In all seriousness, for all the crap that we took in the first few weeks due to Mi...

Tonight @ the Bradley Center - 7:30 p.m.

Keeping with Cirque du Soleil’s vision of cramming as many amazing acts of human agility onto a stage as can possibly fit at one time, Saltimbanco is the company’s oldest touring revue and a good overview of the company’s blend of ballet, juggling, acrobatics and general feats of strength. Though, like all of Cirque du Soleil’s early...

Tonight @ the Turner Hall Ballroom - 7 p.m.

The promoters of the eccentric 7 p.m. Mondo Lucha Wrestling/Variety Show tonight at the Turner Hall Ballroom are wisely betting that Milwaukeeans won’t be able to resist its wry and lurid combination of irony, kitsch and breasts. At the top of tonight’s freak show is a Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling smackdown, complete with the requisite masks (and hopefully some semblance of cultural sensitivity), but there’s...

Tonight @ the Bradley Center - 6:30 p.m.

Hulkomania is no longer running wild, and thanks to the scandal that emerged after the death of wrestler Chris Benoit, professional wrestling has been going through some tough times lately. WWE matches, however, are still fun, rowdy and unapologetically stupid events, refreshing in their distance for current events . . .

Excuses, Excuses November 07, 2007 | 06:34 PM I'll be the first to admit that I've been a bit of a bloggin' slacker this season. The past few weeks have been especially rough, as my truck gave up the ghost and I've been relegated to taking the bus to and from work. That means I left the house at 7 am and returned sometimes around 6 pm (on a good day). The bus makes me motion sick, so I was in no ...

Tonight @ the Hi Hat Garage - 8 p.m.

Think of Pecha Kuchas as speed-learning sessions. Each evening, a lineup of presenters gives quick lectures on an idiosyncratic topic of their choice: Subjects at Milwaukee’s first Pecha Kucha event in June ranged from the informative (recycling programs) to the bizarre (anarchist bird watchers). To eliminate the chance . . .

Theater Preview

Playwright Neil Haven doesn't recall when or why he imagined an agoraphobic live-in elevator operator, but he does know why he wrote it down. There's an inherently dramatic dynamic to an offbeat character like that. That kind of character dynamic fits rather nicely in the center of a plot structure. The plot in question is that of Haven's new play Stuck, which opens Aug. 14th at the 10th Street Theatre. The play debuted last month on the campus at UW-Whitewater, where the production was developed . .
