Ah, the fabled cabin up north. It’s rivaled only by the bedroom and Folsom Prison in the pantheon of romanticized places to record an album, conjuring restorative images of nature and solitude, as well as a whiff of man-versus-wilderness excitement. Countless musicians have made the trek up to the woods hoping for inspiration to strike, and as recording technology grows cheaper and more...

Today @ North and Farwell Avenues, noon

Situated on a busy little strip of North Avenue that’s usually crowded even when there isn’t a free, well-funded street festival, the East Side’s Summer Soulstice festival once again wins points for imagination this year. Unusual highlights include BMX demonstrations, an extreme volleyball tournament and a Qdoba burrito-eating contest, but the main draw is the same as most other music festivals: the music. And this year there’s no shortage of good stuff. Milwaukee bands including The Buskers (4 p.m.), Juniper Tar (5:30 p.m.), The Lackloves (6 p.m.), Invade Rome (8 p.m.)...

Tonight @ Y-Not III, 8 p.m.

The group’s bombastically orchestrated...

The Louisianan Creole blues master first cut his...

Tonight @ the Cactus Club - 10 p.m.

For nearly a decade, they were one of the city’s most prominent bands, but when they took a turn toward heavier, psychedelic rock and roll with their latest album, Light Eyed and Villainous, the guys in Freshwater Collins decided that a name change was long overdue. Now, as Invade Rome, the band is releasing their new disc, a muscular collection marked by rich production and oversized drums, tonight with a 10 p.m. show at the Cactus...

This Week in Milwaukee

Thursday, Oct. 16, Minus the Bear w/ Annuals and Themes @ Turner Hall Ballroom, 7 p.m. With their twisty, tangled guitars and number-crunching chord changes, Minus the Bear sound increasingly disconnected from a greater indie-rock scene that now prefers manic, cute-overload pop or tranquilized...

Today @ Center Street in Riverwest - 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In just a few weeks the city will be overrun by graying bikers blasting Steppenwolf and grumbling about their old ladies, but the annual Rockerbox Motorcycle Show in Riverwest, which runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Center Street, attracts a different, more youthful kind of biker counterculture—in particular, those side-burned . . .
