Congrats to Badgers junior defenseman Jamie McBain who was announced as WCHA Player of the Year today. The conference announced their awards today. Obviously with McBain's POY title, he was also named first-team all-conference.Here's the paragraph from their release:"WCHA Player of the Year Jamie McBain, a junior from Faribault, Minn., was also named to the All-WCHA First Team. One of the nation's ...

After last night's bombarding 7-1 victory, tonight's 4-2 win seemed like a grinder. Yet, aside from a late-game barrage, it felt like the Badgers had control of the entire match. Midway through the final period, the announcers on my broadcast commented that Minnesota State had not changed their game plan. I think they were saying that the Mavericks hadn't panicked, but it also made me wonder why, ...

The Badger women's hockey team will be headed to their fourth straight Frozen Four starting next Friday in Boston after a dominating quarterfinal victory over Dartmouth today.Afterward, the Dartmouth coach seemed a little stunned:“Wow, Wisconsin is pretty good,” Hudak said with a nervous laugh. “We made seven or eight mistakes and they scored on seven of them.”Patty Kaz finalist Jessie Vet...

After an absolutely awful few weeks of the season, the Badger men ended on a spectacular high note, beating McNaughton cup winners North Dakota Saturday. Derek Stepan scored two short-handed goals in one penalty kill (and had more than one chance to make a natural hat-trick short-handed) and the Kohl Center was louder than I'd heard it in a long time - probably not since 2006's championship run.Wi...

Congrats to the ladies for winning their fourth title in five years. More than once this season I have said how much it sucks for the Badgers that in a season where they were undefeated more than halfway through the season and have just a few losses (I'm at work and can't access the internet to find the exact number - thank goodness Blogger's a Google company so I'm allowed access) that not only i...

Jamie McBain is a senior defender for the Badgers. That doesn't stop him from being the team's top-scorer, with 28 points. Nor did it keep him from winning WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.McBain scored the opening goal of the Badgers' weekend when he notched a short-handed score just before the end of the first period Friday night to totally take the wind out of t...

The Fairly Detached Observers

Six hours of Super Bowl pregame coverage. SIX HOURS! And that was just on NBC; four hours on ESPN put the TV gasbagging into double digits. The Observers pride themselves on never watching one second of such “maybe this, maybe that” silliness. As kickoff approached, the only blather they listened to was...

Up by 14 points with under 14 minutes left to play, the Badgers decided to stop playing defense and ended up losing the game in OT. As if it weren't bad enough to blow the kind of lead that came from absolutely dominating the opposing team after you'd started the game down 10-2, the Badgers did it in the most lackluster, pathetic fashion. Minnesota crept back in, little-by-little, so that it was a...

We won't talk about Marquette's embarrassing loss to Dayton -Instead, let's focus on Wisconsin's last-second win over Virginia Tech in the Big Ten/ACC Shootout. Despite leading most of the game, the Badgers needed a last-second shot from Trevon Hughes to secure the win. UW started strong, building their lead to as much as 23-12 at times in the first half. The VT big man (who's name currently escap...

In what must be the absolute oddest stalker combination, a former Wisconsin Badger football player has been harassing Athletic Director (and his former coach) Barry Alvarez with threatening phone calls about Maria Sharapova. There's not a lot of information, but the guy, Leonard Taylor Jr., 32, of Indianapolis, is a former player who's father is saying he's a paranoid schizophrenic who isn't takin...
