Obama critics advocate the same policies that created this disaster

Albert Einstein realized that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Clearly, the conservative critics of President Barack Obama’s stimulus plan are no Einsteins. Republicans continue to argue for ex- President-Bush-type tax cuts—tax cuts for the wealthy.

I’m Art Kumbalek and man oh manischewitz what a world, ain’a? So listen, right now I’m paying some attention to the presidential inauguration hoopla on TV ’cause it’s my duty as a responsible journalist to know what’s up at all times, and besides what else is there to watch? There are no basketball games going on...

What to Hope For (and realistically expect) in Obama's First Year

Merle Haggard once famously predicted that "when a President goes through the White House doors, and does what he says he'll do, we'll all be drinkin' that free Bubble-Up, and eatin' that Rainbow Stew."

Tonight @ the Sugar Maple - 7 p.m.

Drinking Liberally normally meets on Wednesdays, but for an event as historic as the inauguration of the country’s first African American president (and the farewell to the country’s least popular president), they’re willing to make an exception. The thirsty lefties meet tonight at the Sugar Maple at 7 p.m. for a free event they’re billing as the “End of an Error” inauguration party.

Tonight @ Serb Hall - 7 p.m.

After years of campaigning with a platform of change, president-elect Obama will finally have the opportunity to implement his transformation of Washington, but before he starts, there’s going to be a rocking, celebrity-laden party in the nation’s capital. In Washington, the Obama administration is going to have a license to kill eight years of government showering gifts upon the wealthy and create real change with tax breaks for ordinary, working Americans who actually need them, universal health care and millions of new jobs. In dramatic contrast...

Bold action for difficult times

This year, like every year, gives us an opportunity to consider where we've been, how we arrived at the present moment, and how we can launch a new year with promise.2008 was particularly difficult and is ending with our nation in the deepest recession since the Great Depression in the 1930s. These difficulties offer us an opportunity to make big changes in the way we think about our society, our neighborhoods and our role in moving into the future in a fair and just manner.

There is a scene in Monty Python & The Holy Grail where a group of outraged peasants, desperate to scapegoat someone for their lot in life, eagerly produce an unfortunate young woman to the local authorities, proclaiming her to be a witch. "How do you know she's a witch?" asks the magistrate? "Well, she LOOKS LIKE ONE!" bellows the crowd! Following the unfolding saga of Illinois Governor Pete Blagojevich, I was frankly surprised that it took as long as it did...

Those among us who are sure that Barack Obama has descended from Heaven to cool the planet, calm the seas, and bring peace on earth are getting a full dose of reality from the Rod Blagojevich scandal. Obama, in reality, has crawled and clawed his way up from the sewer of corruption and graft that is the Chicago political machine. No one has stated definitively that Mr. Obama played any part in the attempted sale of his senate seat. In fact, the transcripts of Mr. Blagojevich's conversations, in which he repeatedly refers to Mr. Obama using language unfit for prime time would seem to imply the opposite.
