Tonight @ the Summerfest Fairgrounds

Summerfest kicks off its two-week tonight with a bang—literally. The Big Gig will light up the sky tonight with its annual Big Bang Fireworks display at 10:30 p.m. (so if you’re commuting, avoid the lakefront accordingly.)

Despite my mach speeds on the race course, I try not to brag about my fame and fortune. After all, I wasn’t always a star. That got me thinking, who else is out there with celebrity status and German heritage? Today, I put my paws to the keyboard and googled a few of my favorite celebs who turned their German looks, brains, and talents to fame. Here’s my top 5, but feel free to add o...

Cascio Music, Shepherd Express Bring Local Music to Summerfest

Summerfest has long prided itself on being the world’s largest music festival, pulling in hundreds of performers from around the globe. But while local musicians have always had a place on the festival’s crowded lineup, it was only last year that the annual celebration created a stage reserved solely for music from around Milwaukee.

They say Milwaukee is a cover town, and this year’s Summer Soulstice Music Festival Saturday on North Avenue did little to disprove that notion. Emanating from usual suspects like The Love Monkeys to less likely sources like Northern Room, covers abounded. Last call for kielbasa: Polish Fest at the Summerfest grounds comes to an end today. Folk dancing, polka and all sorts of sausages are among the highlights of the least-attended (but in many circles, most-cherished) of Milwaukee’s major ethnic festivals. Drink a beer, chow down on some sauerkraut and let . . .

Today @ the Milwaukee Art Museum

With over 170 artists exhibiting and selling their wares, art is obviously the main draw at the Lakefront Festival of the Arts, but the festival’s entertainment line-up also offers a high-culture respite from the usual cover bands that dominant Milwaukee’s summer outdoor events. Many of the band’s playing the main stage . . .

Today @ the Summerfest grounds

Being the least attended of Milwaukee’s ethnic festivals at the Summerfest grounds may be a dubious honor, but it’s also one of Polish Fest’s selling points. Without battling incessant crowds, patrons can enjoy all of the amenities of any other major festivals: the food, dancing, live music, fireworks, etc. Of course . . .
