I know Opening Day for a lot of people was yesterday, but we Milwaukeeans had to wait til today. But finally, we have baseball!!! So far, Suppan had a better outing than I'd imagined he would (the triple early was a good pitch at the knees, so I can't blame him for that.) We chased Tim Lincecum after just 3 innings. We scored 5 runs without hitting a home run. But, surprise, surprise, our bul...

Sports in Real Life

I’ve spent the last few days in Daytona Beach, Florida. Yes, the weather has been great. Seventy degrees and sunny, but technically, I was working. During the past few weeks I’ve been working with umpires. Major League Baseball type umpires. First, an article with umpire legend and Milwaukee native, Bruce Froemming. This week, I’ve been at the Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School in Ormond Beach, Florida. Like you, I didn’t...

Sports in Real Life

Former Cubs pitcher Milt Pappas signed with the Orioles out of high school back in 1957, before Robin Yount was a zygote. His signing bonus, $4,000-essentially what CC Sabathia drops on lunch. This was an anomaly as these were the days when almost every player went to the minors and earned their stripes, riding on crappy busses and learning how to throw a change-up. In September of 1971, Pappas retired...

Today @ the Summerfest grounds - 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Nearly 26 years have passed since the last Brewers postseason. Many people, including a handful of the team roster, have never experienced the MLB playoffs in Milwaukee in their lifetime, so The Brewers have planned a major rally this evening to bridge the generational gap and to celebrate in the token Milwaukee festival style. The Brewers Postseason Rally will be held at the Summerfest Grounds from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the...

Jim Cryns on Sports

So this is what a baseball playoff atmosphere feels like in Milwaukee. I was around for the last one, but at that time I was much thinner, had more hair, less intelligence. Miller Park was an exciting place to be last night. The fans armed with their Brewers towels, waved them vigorously from the early innings. When CC Sabathia was in a jam, they waved the towels again and he magically got out of the inning. When a clutch hit was required, the towels again...
