By Russ Bickerstaff
Racine's Over Our Heads Players will be continuing its long-running Snowdance sketch comedy fest this coming  February. A series of 10-minute comedies will filter through the stage of Racine's Sixth Street Theatre. Of course, OOHPs can't have the festival without scripts . . . and it is once again soliciting for ten-minute comic scripts. Now through November 1st, the players will be accept...

Midwest family drama in Racine

By Russ Bickerstaff
There's a kind of romantic notion of ink on paper . . . kind of a personal connection between  thoughts, ideas and words that has an enduring sanctity. Based on an actual discovery, Racine native Barbara Tylla's The Cedar Chest Letters tells the story of a bunch of thoughts that had been painstakingly packed away in an attic. Actual family letters were found in an old chest that told an old f...

Over Our Head Players return to sketch comedy in June

By Russ Bickerstaff
Over Our Head Players continues its reasonably long-running sketch comedy program with a series of performances in June. Theatre/Schmeatre continues its Second City-inspired mix of topical and irreverent short, unrelated original sketches.    And "In homage to the format of Saturday Night Live," each show features performances from area musicians. There's a different musical act every per...

The Racine-based theatre has nnounced a bonus production that has been tacked on to the end of their 20th season. Comedy with Laptops Just South of Milwaukee

By Russ Bickerstaff
Over Our Head Players refers to it as an "on-line bedroom farce." Actually, the Off-Broadway production has the entire cast sitting at laptops. The action of the play depends on laptops, Blackberries and iPhones. An extra-marital affair gets a bit mixed up in a modern show that is now in its second year off-broadway.    The script is written by Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore . . . th...

Racine’s Over Our Head Players look for a cast for Yasmina Reza’s ART

By Russ Bickerstaff
Racine’s Over Our Head Players is looking for a cast for Art. Contemporary French playwright Yasmina Reza’s Art is a four-character drama, but as one of the characters is an inanimate blank, white canvas with a few white lines on it and no dialogue, they’ll probably have a prop stand-in for that one. The drama concerns three men. One of them purchased the painting for a ridiculous sum ...

Over Our Head Announces Sketches

By Russ Bickerstaff
Just as I prepare to head out to the new play festival at Carte Blanche Studios, I notice Racine’s Over Our Head Players have announced the shorts they will be performing on the festival. Here’s a look at the shorts that will be competing for the $300 cash prize at this year’s Snowdance 10 Minute Comedy Festival. The Gift Of Rift  by Evan Allgood from Virginia. A domestic Christmas morni...

Over Our Head Players stage classic satire

By Russ Bickerstaff
Some time ago I had the distinct pleasure of talking to John McGivern, Christopher Tarjan and David Cecsarini about a production of Irma Vep that they were working on. It’s an extremely weird horror comedy involving vampires, werewolves and two men appearing in countless different roles in full quick change costuming. It was interesting to find out just how much work the script was beyond the ...

Over Our Head Players present Milmore and VanZandt’s DO NOT DISTURB

By Russ Bickerstaff
The hotel room is a perfect springboard for just about any kind of story. It'™s a generic spae that can be filled with just about any kind of human drama or comedy. Pink Banana stage a production of Stephen Belber'™s hotel-based one act drama Tape in an actual hotel room. There was kind of a memorable horror film. One of the more memorably surreal horror films of the past few years was 1408--...
