The pizza oven at the revamped Abus may strike longtime patrons as a shocking concession to American taste‹until they taste the pizza. Whole or by the slice, the crusty pizza is redolent of the Near East with its heavy topping of white cheese, tomatoes and choice of beef or chicken shawerma (similar to the more familiar gyros) or a variety of vegetarian toppings. Otherwise, the menu sticks to traditional dishes of the Eastern Mediterranean, prepared from scratch without mixes or microwave ovens. The falafel sandwich is a mouthful, a pocket pita tightly stuffed with ground, seasoned chickpeas, parsley and diced pickles and tomatoes. The food of Ethiopia can be very fiery. Alem offers a gentler version though their hot pepper sauce still has a richness and depth of flavor. Try the doro wot which is chicken with a hardboiled egg in this delicious sauce. There are also beef and lamb versions of this dish. Half of the menu is vegetarian items. Most of these tend to be mild, mostly of greens and lentils. Every entrée is served on injera, a round flatbread with a spongy texture. This is also your dining utensil. Prices are very moderate; nothing is over $10.

At this long-running Wauwatosa restaurant, Friday still means all the fish you want for one low price. The Icelandic cod is served in a generous portion, brought family style to the table along with french fries and lemon wedges. Alioto's Italian heritage is preserved in some residual lunch menu items, including a meatball sandwich and chicken Parmesan. Alioto's large dining room is wood paneled like a rec room and the green vinyl upholstered chairs have survived long enough to be called retro chic. But more important is the food. Alioto's fish fry is a flavorful reminder of the best things from Milwaukee in times gone by.

Located in Milwaukee's up-and-coming Fifth Ward neighborhood, the Alterra Foundry is housed in the former Kramer International foundry. The café's post-industrial design pays homage to the manufacturing tradition and history of our city. Opened in early 2006, the Foundry quickly has become a favorite morning coffee destination, a convenient place for lunch, and a relaxing hang-out spot in the evening.

Most of the food establishments at Bayshore Town Center are parts of chains, but at least one is local. This would be Alterra, a home-brewed source of coffee and tea. The mall's Alterra has a countrified, rustic decor with painted hoop-backed wooden chairs. In addition to coffee and tea, a wide variety of scones, muffins and cookies stand to satisfy the sweet tooth. Light meal options are also available. Salads and tortilla wraps come prepackaged. The small kitchen offers a three-cheese grilled-cheese sandwich as well as an avocado BLT made with Nueske's bacon, a Wisconsin favorite.

Alterra on Humboldt, established in 2007, houses Alterra's headquarters, main roasting facility, bakery and the Humboldt café, with ample seating available inside and on the patio. The Humboldt facility has been honored as the “Best Environmentally Friendly Project” by the Business Journal Real Estate Awards and received a Mayor’s Urban Design Award. It also won the MANDI State Farm Insurance “Building Blocks Award” for a development project that promotes the social and cultural life of the community.

This Mayfair kiosk is located on the ground level in front of the J.Crew and Apple stores.

Located in the Locker's Point complex of Wauwatosa, Alterra's eighth café is housed under the same roof as Locker's Flowers and Chocolaterie Stam at the corner of Swan Boulevard and North Avenue. The building's large windows are reminiscent of the original Locker's greenhouse and offer a bright, sunny seating area.

Built in 1888, the historic Milwaukee River Flushing Station is now home to Alterra at the Lake, a unique cafe/deli serving sandwiches, soups and salads, plus freshly brewed coffee, espresso, tea, and bakery items made daily from scratch. Every summer, Alterra at the Lake is also host to the Florentine Opera and Musica del Lago music series.
