First Year Exhibition 2014: Empathy
The First Year Program in Art and Design prepares students to be creative, engaged and ready to advance into their chosen areas of study. This program exposes students to studio and community resources as it develops productive relationships, valuable skill sets and a broad awareness of contemporary Art and Design practice.
The first year is a time of artistic and personal development during which students choose their areas of concentration and begin to see themselves becoming practitioners in their field.
Each year the First Year Program faculty selects a theme around which instructors may link assignments and readings. This year's First Year theme is Empathy. It is our belief that by exploring this theme, and our own layers of understanding it, we become more engaged as citizens and individuals as well as more true to our individual and collective voices as artists and designers in society. While not all work in this exhibition addresses that theme, instructors have woven ideas, projects, readings and discussion about Empathy throughout their teaching.
