“Gas Lamp Express,” the annual garden train show, will open Sat., Jan. 18 at The Domes, 524 S. Layton Blvd. G-scale trains will wind their way along 600 feet of track, traveling through a Victorian landscape in celebration of the steam-powered age. A steampunk theme stretches the celebration to include the retro-futuristic ideas of H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, and others who envisioned a post-apocalyptic future in which steam power regains mainstream use.

Last year over 65,000 people attended the show, making it the most popular show of the year. Drawing on the cross-generational appeal of trains, The Domes welcomes visitors thrilled with Thomas the Tank Engine to those with years of experience creating their own layouts in the basement or garden.

Volunteers from three state-wide train clubs–WI Garden Railroad, Kenosha Railroad and Wisconsin Illinois Train Club–will run their collectible trains daily. Among the trains running will be Thomas the Tank Engine, his friends, and specialty trains that run on steam.

The show runs through March 30.

Related special events are planned during the show’s run. “Gardens & Gears: Steampunk Faire,” Sun., Feb. 16, will feature a gadget-filled garden party with creative artists and craftsmen, fashion designers, and entertainers—all having a vision of an alternate past. “Steam Engine Day,” Sat., March 29, will highlight the age of steam with model steam engines puffing along the track.

Hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Thursday evenings Music Under Glass concerts run from 6:30-9 p.m; and Saturdays and Sundays, hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
