The Shouting Matches w/ Alpha Consumer
We know this much about Justin Vernon: the man loves side projects almost as much as he loves cabins. Between Bon Iver records, the singer-songwriter had tracked albums with Volcano Choir, an experimental collaboration with members of Milwaukee’s Collections of Colonies of Bees and Gayngs, a soft-rock tribute project. His latest band isn’t nearly so high concept, though. The Shouting Matches is a direct blues-rock trio featuring Peter Wolf Crier’s Brian Moen and Megafaun’s Phil Cook. Anybody looking for a dose of “Skinny Love”-style sensitivity (or even Vernon’s signature falsetto) on the group’s lighthearted debut album Grownass Man will be severely disappointed, but the record makes good on its promise of blustery riffs, which it delivers in spades.
