…And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead w/ Ume, The Red Paintings and Whips
In recent years, Austin’s ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead have felt like a band without a country. Pitchfork media once bestowed a rare 10.0 on the band’s 2002 album Source Tags & Codes, but the critical prestige from that breakthrough has long since subsided; these days the independent-music site hardly ever writes about the band. Meanwhile, the group’s grandiose prog-punk epics remain radio anathema, off limits to all but the most esoteric college-radio stations. At least they’re still making great music. Last year’s Lost Songs was admirably scrappy, a move away from some of the over-the-top indulgences of their post-Source Tags records. It’s the work of a band that’s firing on all cylinders, even if few listeners outside of their ultra-loyal fanbase will ever hear it.
