Twitter was fired up by reports last year that R&B singer Omarion had joined Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group. “It is 2004?" jokes were all over the place, but the signing actually made sense. MMG has become increasingly R&B-minded with each release. Strip away the bangers, and Rick Ross’s Teflon Don was essentially a late-night soul record. The singles from Wale’s Ambition were even more R&B-minded. Omarion adds depth to the label, and helps court the female audience that increasingly seems integral to the MMG business model. Plus the guy is a great singer, as he’s demonstrated on the tracks he’s released since joining the label. If MMG can work for Wale, it can work for Omarion.
