Summer Arts Series: The Wizard of Oz
The next event in the Summer Arts Series at Carroll University is a collaborative production of “The Wizard of Oz” by Waukesha South High School and Carroll Academy. Performances will be Saturday, July 13, 2013, at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., and 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 14. This event is free and open to the public.
The play will be staged at the Outdoor Amphitheatre behind the Todd Wehr Memorial Library, 200 N. East Ave., Waukesha, or in Otteson Theatre, 238 N. East Ave., if rain. Some seating will be provided, but guests are encouraged to bring blankets, picnic baskets and non-alcoholic beverages. Food and beverages will be available for purchase from Carroll University Dining Services.
“The Wizard of Oz” is produced by arrangement with TAMS-WITMARK MUSIC LIBRARY, INC. It is written by L. Frank Baum with music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, and background music by Herbert Stothart. Dance and vocal arrangements are by Peter Howard with orchestration by Larry Wilcox. It was adapted by John Kane for the Royal Shakespeare Company and based upon the classical motion picture owned by Turner Entertainment Co. and distributed in all media by Warner Bros.
The actors are current students and alumni of Waukesha South High School, with Carroll Academy students entering grades 3-6 as the munchkins and flying monkeys. Carroll University students are on the production team, including director Ryan Albrechtson, a sophomore theater major and 2012 graduate of Waukesha South.
“The show is going to be amazing,” Albrechtson said. “The costumes are beautiful, and there is a lot to see. We staged this show outside, which has proved to be a challenge but brings a new light onto the story. It will be a great experience for families in Waukesha.”
