Nobody could accuse Of Montreal of stagnancy. Kevin Barnes’ band has reinvented itself about a half-dozen times since the its late-’90s beginnings as part of the Elephant 6 chamber-pop collective. Over the years, they’ve evolved from Beatles-influenced psychedelic twee to giddy glam-rock electro and more recently to thick, off-kilter funk. Since their 2007 zenith Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?, their records have grown increasingly difficult, with last year’s proggy Paralytic Stalks standing as one of their busiest yet. The band’s musical restlessness is mirrored by its live shows, which often play out as experimental theater, complete with weirdo costumes, props and set pieces. Dressing in colorful, feminine frills, Barnes shares his deepest fears and shortcomings in the form of über-catchy, LSD-laced pop.
