The Devil Makes Three w/ Jonny Fritz
File California’s The Devil Makes Three with the growing pile of evidence that roots music is the new punk. The acoustic Santa Cruz trio’s brand of train-hopping hobo music is twangy on the surface, but their booze-soaked tunes could just as easily be played as fast and loud hardcore songs. The last time the group visited Milwaukee they played a very packed Linneman’s Riverwest Inn; this time they’ll make room for their growing fanbase with a performance at Turner Hall Ballroom with opener Jonny Fritz (formerly Jonny Corndawg), a country-singing oddball who writes wry, impossibly clever lyrics in the Shel Silverstein mold. This week he released a new album on ATO Records, Dad Country, which he recorded with members of Dawes.
