Alt-J w/ Hundred Waters
Every year creates another handful of British bands that stir big buzz and attract lots of press overseas, but completely and utterly fail to make a lasting impression in America, despite the best efforts of the U.K.’s overzealous hype machine. Named for the keyboard shortcut that produces the ∆ symbol, the British fourpiece Alt-J have proven to be one of the rare exceptions to that cycle, earning a whole lot of attention stateside for their shimmering 2012 debut An Awesome Wave, which has earned the group plenty of Radiohead comparisons. For all of its arty indulgences, it’s a lush, inviting album, one that prioritizes solid songcraft above surface aesthetics.
