JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound w/ Kid Millions
Like Milwaukee’s Kings Go Forth, with whom they’ve shared stages, Chicago’s JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound draw from the brassy sounds of soul music’s past, taking particular cues from the Memphis R&B popularized by Stax Records. Those influences come across cleanly on the group’s deliciously funky 2011 album Want More—which includes a mean, if unlikely, cover of Wilco’s “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart”—but it’s on stage that the group’s chemistry really clicks. A born showman who trained as an actor, singer Brooks revels in the opportunity to dance, swivel and sweat in front of an audience. The group shares this show with Milwaukee rapper and old-record enthusiast Kid Millions, who will deliver a set of vintage funk and soul music.
