There are two Mongolian barbecue restaurants in this area. The older
restaurant, and my preferred choice, is Genghis Khan (725 N. Mayfair Road,
Wauwatosa). The barbecue is a tabletop grill topped with a metal sheet.
When the Milwaukee Ale House opened 15 years ago, the Third Ward was a
very different place. Many of the buildings were half-occupied and the area
wasn’t nearly as vibrant as it is today. In 2012, the Third Ward
Birria is a soup/stew found on the menus of many authentic Mexican
restaurants. It can be prepared with any type of meat. Most local restaurants
use goat, but El Canaveral (2501 W. Greenfield Ave.) prepares it with lamb.
Parthenon Foods (9131 W. Cleveland Ave., West Allis) is located in a
quiet residential neighborhood. The name implies Greek foods, but the items
here have a far wider range. You will find jars of Serbian ajvar, Hungarian hot
Peruvian restaurants have been in this area since the
1970s, but there have never been many of them. Some may still remember places
like El Inca on Farwell Avenue or El Condor on Downer, but both closed many
