A 24-year-old Milwaukee rapper with a fleet tongue and a Drake-esque sing-song flow, M-Nat released his debut album, DreamCity: The Patience, last week. Like most debut albums, from rappers or otherwise, it's a bit rough around the edges, and it can't completely disguise what must have been a fairly modest production budget. But there's clear promise here, nonetheless: M-Nat has strong pop impulses, a knack for concise wordplay and a fair amount to say about identity and the American dream. He credits his parents for that perspective.

"They immigrated to America from India in the '80s and worked their asses to provide for me and my brothers," he explains. "They knew little English and had no money in their pockets. They were able to open a corner store on the North Side and today represent the American dream. Anything less than success would be a high disappointment."

While his parents worked to keep their business afloat, M-Nat dealt with his own struggles. "I was an outcast all throughout high school and didn't have many friends," he says. "A lot of that had to do with going to MPS for school then moving to the suburbs where the schools aren't as diverse. I started writing poems to express myself. Slowly the poems started turning into raps and then the raps turned into songs. I used to push homemade mixtapes in school, trying anything to get my name out there."
