The Rep’s ‘Yankee Tavern’ Questions the Truth
Theater Review
While the arguments are compelling, Ray’s diatribes dominate the first half of the production, eclipsing the opportunity for Vaughn and guest actor Marti Gobel to create a subtle, genuine relationship between their respective characters, Adam and Janet, who are engaged. Making the most of a small ration of dialogue, Rep acting company member Torrey Hanson portrays a mysterious patron named Palmer with calm severity, an artistic choice that accentuates the weight of the information he shares with the other characters, information that reconstructs conspiracy as reality. While Yankee Tavern can be a challenge to follow, the play isn't really about what did or didn't happen; it's about the torment of uncertainty, a truth of life that all of us can relate to.
The Milwaukee Rep’s Yankee Tavern continues through Jan. 31 at the Quadracci Powerhouse Theater.

If you missed the final performance of Yankee Tavern Sunday you didn't miss much. The actor playing Ray tried too hard in his role as the conspiracy "nut", while there seemed to be NO relationship between the lovers, Adam and Janet. The guest actress was wooden in her performance and I found myself focusing on her "dead hands" . There seemed to be no relationship between her and her fiance. I drove 3 hours (round trip) and have for several decades to enjoy the stellar quality of the Rep. I will have to rethink my commitment to season tickets when the last several trips have been with a diluted cast of interns and guests that do not have the same level of excellence that I have always found in the Resident Acting Company. Very Disappointing.
