Coming together in Seattle in 2009, The Head and the Heart have taken great advantage of the rising popularity of all things Americana. Like fellow folk rockers The Lumineers and Mumford & Sons, The Head and the Heart offer well-crafted songs that have broad appeal. One can imagine both grizzled country music fans and earnest indie rock aficionados singing along to such songs as “Down in the Valley” (from the band’s 2011 self-titled debut) and “Shake” (from 2013’s Let’s Be Still). There is an appealing sense of populism in the band’s material, one that blurs genre boundaries in its attempt to truly connect with all listeners.

Understanding the appeal of such an inclusive approach to songwriting, vaunted label Sub Pop Records reissued The Head and the Heart’s first album in 2011; it quickly became one of the label’s best-selling debut releases in years. Two years later, Let’s Be Still was released and shot to number 10 on the Billboard 200. The next time the group rolls through Milwaukee they may be headlining the BMO Harris Bradley Center. Make sure you’ll be able to tell your friends you saw them at Summerfest.
