Fitz and the Tantrums
Friday, July 4 @ Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard, 10 p.m.
The soul-flavored indie pop group’s star has been on the ascent ever since. They opened for Maroon 5 on its 2009 tour and have gotten beaucoup mileage out of their hit “MoneyGrabber.” The infectious retro sound and clever pop hooks frame a solid musical foundation for the well-dressed sextet that bubbles and churns throughout each brief, catchy number.
In addition to Fitzpatrick, the band consists of vocalist Noelle Scaggs, saxophonist James King, bassist Joe Karnes, keyboardist Jeremy Ruzumna and drummer John Wicks. Noticeably absent from that lineup: a guitarist.
“I did want to try and make a big sounding record without guitars,” Fitzpatrick told the website The Waster in 2011. “What it does for your ears is it makes a different sound…more about the rhythm section, the bass and the drums and what the organ’s doing. And it creates this really cool pocket for the vocals to sing in.”
Fitz and the Tantrums will get your party started.
