For Birdie

Near the piano the globe of Pluto spins and then tries to fly away on its black wings.  In front of the television there's a circle of light where you would sleep and stretch out your arms in the darkness.  Outside the door every stranger in the world knew not to come even one inch closer.  You smiled and the earth cracked open and out walked crows and angels carrying toys and tiny pyramids.  Now beyond the windows the willows are swaying and shaking out their long cold hair.  But you were always there, you didn't fear the darkness or snow or the sun.  The songs of birds preceded you and they even called out your name.  You were always patient even when we were insane.  I remember you lying on the bed, reminding us that we were living.  You looked up and gently touched our faces and our hands.  You watched us work and you approved.  You ate our food and slept with us and sometimes you jumped into our dreams.  Finally an arrow pierced your body and you were felled like a saint, but not before you showed us the map that would lead us to heaven.
