Recent radio ads for Ashley’s Bar-B-Que (1501 W. Center St.) claim “We’re baaack!” and it’s good to have the city’s self-proclaimed king of grilled meat around again. You’re on your own as to where to eat it after you get your order from its strictly take-out locale. Find a place to open Ashley’s Styrofoam boxes and the hearty helpings of soul-food BBQ staples, including ribs, chicken and pork shoulder slathered in generous reservoirs of sauce balanced in vinegary bite and sugary sweetness will greet your nostrils and taste buds. White bread, baked beans, finely cut creamy coleslaw and potato salad number among the standard side options, but for extra fiber, Ashley’s makes some of the most flavorful collard greens in Milwaukee. Many of the meats also come in sandwich form, but especially hungry and adventurous diners may want to try the Prince, a gyro/Philly cheese steak hybrid likely unique in the city.
