Country-rockers the Eagles may have performed the soundtrack of the 1970s, releasing the 20th century’s highest-selling album, Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975), but the “Hotel California” creators have been a long time gone. The band is back after more than 30 years of on-again-off-again performances and recordings, and their Summerfest concert will be the second of their eight-date reunion tour.

Despite rumors of infighting among band members, the lineup has been relatively stable since the group of Los Angles session musicians first got together in 1971 as Linda Ronstadt’s backup band. The reunion tour will see Eagles’ founders Glenn Frey, Don Henley and even Bernie Leadon, who left the band in 1975, joined by latecomers Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit for an evening of greatest hits and a few surprises.

The band got its name from, of all people, comedian Steve Martin. After a peyote-and-tequila-fueled party in the Mojave Desert, where Leadon expressed his appreciation of the Hopi Indians’ reverence for the eagle, Martin made the only obvious suggestion, and the name stuck. The band members may no longer live “Life in the Fast Lane,” but chances are no one will leave with a “Peaceful, Easy Feeling” after this Summerfest show.
