Guitarist John Mayer would like everyone to know that he is back and that Milwaukee’s Summerfest appearance will launch a 51-date tour that ends in October with two already sold-out shows in Amsterdam. The Berklee College of Music-trained multi-Grammy Award winner kept a low profile in the wake of some unfortunate kiss-and-tell tales of past sexual conquests that he shared with Playboy magazine in 2010, which he caked in shocking racial epithets. He’s profusely apologized to fans for the remarks, which he says he never intended to be racist, but there’s no doubt that those comments were part of the reason for his two-year disappearance from the public eye (officially he was recovering from a vocal-cord surgery).

Mayer, whose show features opener Phillip Phillips, has a background in a variety of creative endeavors, including standup comedy, journalism and graphic design. His acoustic folk-rock has strong blues underpinnings and he has collaborated with everyone from B.B. King and Buddy Guy to jazz artists John Scofield and Herbie Hancock. At this show, he’ll likely perform songs from Born and Raised, his latest album and one the artist describes as his “most honest.” Let’s hope that along the way he’s developed a better social filter.
