There’s a lot of discussion as to what rapper Pitbull is saying when he repeatedly belts out “dah-ley.” In monolingual America, it sounds like a classy Hepburn “darling,” but really Mr. Worldwide is saying “dale,” Spanish for “go ahead” or “give it.” It is Cuban slang’s mean-anything word—think “fuggedaboutit” in Donnie Brasco—used as everything from an invitation to a goodbye. But taken literally, as a call to incite action, it’s a pretty strong description of Pitbull. Whatever he’s doing, he’s committed to making you do something. As a pitchman, he hustles everything: Kodak, Dr. Pepper, Bud Light and Walmart (in a contest that inspired an infamous Internet prank to send the rapper to the most remote part of Alaska). As a musician, his music is hard not to dance to, drawing on body-moving traditions from reggaeton to hip-house to Miami bass. At Summerfest, his irrepressibly get-down-able music is likely to make you want to take to the aisles and show that Bud Light spokesman how the city of Miller can move. And you should. Go ahead. Give it.
