The song may be called “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” but Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers sure seem to like Summerfest. We’ve lost track of how many times this classic American rock band has headlined the Marcus Amphitheater, but Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers must be doing something right to keep getting invited back. After all, how many bands that have been around since the mid-’70s still have two-thirds of their original members, release albums that hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart (2010’s blues-based Mojo) and can pack 25,000-seat venues? And these guys don’t appear to be slowing down. Petty told rollingstone.com that the band is working on its 13th studio album, which he calls “kind of like Mojo—to a new power. It’s not as strict to the blues as that one, but everything comes from the blues, and we’ve found something new—a new way to stamp the blues.” Fans will be in for a special treat when The Smithereens, another great, albeit less famous, American rock band with classic ’80s singles like “Only a Memory” and “A Girl Like You,” open the show.
