There wasn’t a more arresting, effortless pop song last year than Usher’s “Climax.” Tension bubbles throughout the first couple minutes and once the synthesizer and falsetto voice seem to reach their collective peak, instead of dropping into the anticipated frenzied dance floor banger, the beat retreats back to its starting point. The composed restraint felt in direct opposition to Usher’s unrelenting pop-superstar aesthetic. No surprise that behind the mixing board sat Diplo, a producer never looking to conform to expectations.

Born Wesley Pentz in Tupelo, Mississippi, Diplo spent his early career integrating underground music with normal dance fare, Miami bass and Southern hip-hop in Florida nightclubs. He has three impressive solo records under his belt and two under the moniker Major Lazer (a fictional, one-armed Jamaican militant who fights zombies). His producer work spans divergent musicians and genres, and has included collaborations with noteworthy pop stars including Bruno Mars, Snoop Dogg and Justin Bieber, as well as burgeoning indie acts The xx, Sleigh Bells and, most notably, M.I.A., with whom he rose to fame after co-crafting her hit single “Paper Planes.”
