April 13-14
The Coffee & Wedding Cantatas
Cathedral Church of All Saints, 818 E. Juneau Ave.

Even when he was separated from a liturgical necessity, J.S. Bach still cultivated interest in the musical genre that characterized so many of his religious works: the cantata. “Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht,” BWV 211, better known as the “Coffee Cantata,” satirizes the popularity of the beverage that had only recently taken hold of European society. It's a secular and comic work with 10 musical numbers. More famous yet is “Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten,” BMV 202 (the “Wedding Cantata”), which celebrates the twin joys of dawning love and budding spring. A reception (with coffee) follows the performance.
