Bernard Gilardi, “Into the Light”
300 S. Sixth Ave., West Bend
Most artists do not struggle in isolation, laboring away in a lonely space. But then again, some do. So goes the story of Wisconsin artist Bernard Gilardi. He painted devotedly in his basement studio for more than four decades; his work is now posthumously discovered and publicly shown. Gilardi's luminous paintings are charged with otherworldly wisdom, apocalyptic humor and delicate tenderness. They glow and shimmer, now brilliantly catching the light of day.
