Vegetarians Rejoice at Riviera Maya
Short Orders
When it comes to
local Mexican dining, vegetarians are usually out of luck. Options typically
consist of a cheese quesadilla and possibly a cheese chimichanga. Even most
bean items are out because they might be cooked with lard. An exception to this
vegetarian dilemma can be found on the menu at Riviera Maya (2258 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.), located in
Bay View. The menu is structured differently, in that most entrees are based
first on the moles. Then diners choose between meat or vegetarian options.
Other items, like tacos and burritos, are offered the same way. One
vegetarian-only item is rollitos de col, or stuffed cabbage. The cabbage leaf
is filled with zucchini, corn, red bell pepper and carrot. It is served with a
mild red sauce and topped with pieces of queso fresco. Do not forget the
tortilla soup, which might be the best item on the menu. Riviera Maya proves
that vegetarians need not be ignored.

I've been there once and cannot wait to go back. Had the chicken mole and it was perfect. The atmosphere was colorful yet classy, and the staff was great. Well done Riviera Maya.
