The spare setting only includes white Formica tables and plastic utensils, but this all-vegetarian East Indian menu is filled with rare and unusual delights. Lemon rice, pakora, poori, utappam and malai kofta are all recommended. Also look for coconut raita and chutney. And there is a bakery counter filled with an array of Indian sweets and snacks. Beans & Barley

OK, they are not strictly vegetarian, serving chicken and fish, too. But Beans & Barley has long been Milwaukee’s stalwart for alternative dining, and a great place to people watch. Riverwest Co-op Café
