Bombay Sweets

3401 S. 13th St., 383-3553

19555 W. Bluemound Road,

262-780-2998

The spare setting only includes white Formica tables and plastic utensils, but this all-vegetarian East Indian menu is filled with rare and unusual delights. Lemon rice, pakora, poori, utappam and malai kofta are all recommended. Also look for coconut raita and chutney. And there is a bakery counter filled with an array of Indian sweets and snacks. Beans & Barley

1901 E. North Ave.

OK, they are not strictly vegetarian, serving chicken and fish, too. But Beans & Barley has long been Milwaukee’s stalwart for alternative dining, and a great place to people watch. The dining room is a striking example of contemporary design. On the way out, stop at the organic deli and grocery. (D.L.) $-$$. CC: MC, VS, DS. Beer and wine. Handicap access. 278-7878

Milwaukee’s long-running natural foods co-op (they helped introduce the city to the concept of healthy eating!) has deli and table arrangements at all locations. (D.L.) $. CC: VS, MC, DS. Handicap access.

Riverwest Co-op Café
