Erbert and Gerbert
Subs and Clubs
2338 N. Farwell Ave.
Erbert and Gerbert’s quirkily named store and sandwiches are based on characters co-founder Kevin Schipper’s father used to tell him as a child. “Boney Billy,” a tender turkey breast sub, the “Tullius,” packed with medium-rare roast beef, and the vegetarian “Jacob Bluefinger” are just some of the generously-filled subs you’ll find here. (A.M.) $. CC: VS, MC, AmEx, DS. OD. No smoking. Handicap access. 226-2004

Potbelly’s
135 W. Wisconsin Ave.
Potbelly’s is the perfect antidote to the growing epidemic of generic subs that are all bread and no love. With great renditions of the classics and a few originals, not to mention a signature hot pepper mixture that’s strangely addictive, Potbelly delivers bang for your (around) $5 bucks, in a pleasantly homey setting. (S.R.) $. CC: All major. OD. Handicap access. 226-0014
Suburpia
10853 W. Bluemound Road
Suburpia introduced the submarine sandwich to most Milwaukeeans in the early ’70s—a time when their menu was a good cure for the munchies and their clever radio ads were sung by the still-unknown John Belushi. Suburpia still offers the Davey Jones (tuna), Reuben James (cornbeef), Gold Coast (ham) and Miles Standish (turkey). Served on a sub-shaped bun loaded with cheese, mayo and chopped salad in a tangy dressing, the subs are so heavy laded that the filling tends to slide out of the buns. (D.L.) $.
